About the Nuffield Scheme

Leading local businesses and universities forging the future of science and engineering in the north

Newcastle College STEM Outreach are the regional organisers for the Nuffield Foundation Bursaries scheme in the North East. The scheme aims to offer around 1,500 funded student placements each year throughout the UK. Originally set up in 1943 by William Morris, who later became Lord Nuffield, this national scheme mainly supports self contained educational and social welfare projects to attract young people into science based careers.

This inspirational scheme offers aspiring young scientists the opportunity to explore their chosen field of science, technology, engineering or maths during a 4 to 6 week summer placement. Placements are offered by leading local and national businesses, scientific industrial research institutes and our excellent local universities.

Nuffield Bursaries are available to school and college students in their first year of an advanced or higher level science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) course. This is a great opportunity for students to work alongside professional STEM practitioners on real research projects in an area which interests them. Students will receive £80 per week towards travel and other expenses.
